The theatre courses at DHJ specify in these areas:

Theater History & Development 

These areas of theater have been chosen to excite, inspire, inform and encourage you through your journey. It is our hope that the tools and techniques you learn in this class will prepare you for professional theaters after high school as a student, performer, technical crew member, director, set designer, costume design, makeup artist, or theater enthusiast.
 
Our ultimate goals for this is class is that you will:

  • Improve your technique and performance skills

  • Become familiar and comfortable  with theatrical terminology 

  • Learn and collaborate with your classmates 

  • Push yourself beyond your preconceived boundaries to find new ways to create.

You will learn the basic concepts of theater and creative expression, including exploring theoretical genres throughout history, improvement on improvisations, script and character analysis, beginner playwriting, theater safety, interdependence of technical areas, theatre appreciation, and audience etiquette.

 

This course also provides for the development of playwriting, acting, and technical production skills, such as auditions, rehearsal, and performance techniques. You will have the opportunity to audition for and participate in 3 different  types of theatrical productions throughout the year; a fall production, UIL competition, and a spring production. These productions will allow the skills learned in class to be used in a real world experience. Roles within a theatrical production include actors, director, stage manager, stage crew, lighting designer, sound board operator, costume and makeup designer, box office attendant, and publicity manager.
